Mechanical engineering is divided into the areas of energy, manufacturing, and design. Mechanical engineers are concerned with energy from natural sources, it's economical conversions into useful energy, the processing of materials into useful products, and the education of new engineers. Additionally, mechanical engineers act as an interface between society and technology. There are over twenty four sub-divisions to mechanical engineering ranging from air pollution control to underwater technology. Mechanical engineers frequently shift among the areas of design, production, testing and sales.

Mechanical engineering is an exciting engineering field because of the breadth, flexibility and individuality that it offers. It is a creative profession that takes a broad outlook when solving complex problems. Mechanical engineers hold a unique position because they design, develop and produce many of the tools and equipment required by other engineers. Therefore, their role expands to keep up with the pace of new technology.

Typical job positions for mechanical engineers includes:

Manufacturing engineer
Automotive Engineer
Materials Engineer
Product Design Engineer
Cost & Schedule Engineer
